From: C.D. Crepps To: Department Contacts Cc: Finance Office Subject: service as public servants PUBLIC EMPLOYEE = PUBLIC SERVANT A public servant is a person employed in the public sector on behalf of a government department or agency. As professionals, public servants play a vital role in society. Each one of us should be committed to our roles and responsibilities as public servants and committed to test and measure our values, ethics, and actions as we serve the government and the public. Even when you are not in your office, you represent the County (your employer). By accepting your position, you most assuredly will be closely scrutinized by those who know that you work for the County. Some people are untrusting of public servants and much of that reason has to do with public servants who have not served the public well. Almost daily, you can read and/or hear about some government worker or politician who has abused the powers of their position to the detriment of those they serve. This email is to remind you of the importance of your positions and the trust that has been placed in you by the County and the public you serve. Here are some places where your actions will be most noticed: • Meetings and conferences (in and out of county) • Outside in the parking lot • Agency vehicles • Anytime you’re wearing your ID card (even if you’re not on the clock) If you are known to work in a public position, your actions will be noticed. While driving County-owned vehicles, you are expected to follow all traffic laws and rules as well as County policies regarding your behavior. For example, stay off of your cell phone when you’re driving. Also, when you’re in your office, when you are at meetings, and even when you are in training, focus on the task at hand and show respect for yourself and others by avoiding use of your cell phones unless your communication is of a critical nature at the time. THANK YOU! Best regards, --CD
