Protect County Resources: Prevent Fraud, Waste, and Abuse
Management controls (a.k.a. internal controls) attempt to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse of the County's resources. Management controls are set forth in policies, procedures, steps, notes, and other guidance. Management controls are the rules that intend to protect one's all encompassing health and well-being. When a rule is ignored, side-stepped, or broken, results could be hazardous. Think of possible results from walking across a street without looking for vehicular traffic! Now, think of possible results from leaving your laptop in your car and someone steals that laptop and all its sensitive or personal information. Management controls are here to protect us and County resources.
Many other local governments have setup "fraud, waste, and abuse hotlines." These telephone numbers are publicized to the citizens of the County and asks everyone to call this number to report evidence of fraud, waste, and abuse of the government's resources. In this small rural County, the County Manager's office and the County Commissioners are always willing to hear your concerns. You can find their contact information on the County's Internet. Plus, you may report wasteful or abusive activities to CD Crepps, County Finance Director, at 910-576-4221, extension 1303.
If you know or have reasonable suspicion of fraud or illegal activity, please report this activity to local law enforcement.
The federal government has issued guidance on management's responsibility for internal controls. Thus, I feel compassioned to remind you of the importance of designing and implementing programs and controls to prevent and detect fraud, to reduce or even eliminate waste, and combat abuse of our precious government's resources. Thank you for your dedication to the management of this beautiful County.
